The new planting along Carlson Boulevard in Richmond was completed recently and we are very happy with how the project turned out. Working with the neighbors and the City of Richmond Parks Department, VDA selected plants that were robust—a busy roadway median is a tough environment—but also provide vibrant color and interesting textures for the drivers passing by.

Installation and maintenance of the new planting were designed to the standards set for Bay-Friendly Landscaping. This is an approach to landscape that supports the integrity of the San Francisco Bay by recycling materials, reducing storm water runoff, and conserving water, energy and topsoil. The landscape along the Carlson median will be managed to minimize chemical use. Cardboard sheet mulching, an increasingly popular alternative to herbicide, was used along with layers of gravel and bark to discourage weeds.
