A carefully planned landscape renovation created an opportunity for VDA to explore low water-use planting design and efficient irrigation strategies in this important community space. The original gardens were designed by noted landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. His approach to the site used a Spanish Revival design vocabulary with a distinctly modern sensibility. Many of the elements he designed remain, giving structure and interesting details to the outdoor spaces.
The project started with clearing and a subtle re shaping of the ground to improve drainage flows. Special care was taken during this phase of the project to avoid damage to the root systems of mature trees. New plantings were arranged in masses for visual appeal and efficient watering. Plants varieties were chosen for low water needs and seasonal interest. The Civic Center is in use year-round, so attention was paid to flowering time, foliage color and textural contrast for consistent interest.
