Design competitions offer opportunities to explore new ideas/project types, so they are an ideal chance for creative thinking. This past summer we collaborated with artist Jim Isermann on an entry for a bike rack competition sponsored by the City of Palm Springs.

Our suggested design was not selected, but we think that there is merit in the idea of a “bike stop”—something that goes beyond idea of the bike rack as a piece of street furniture. Our piece was scalable (it could accommodate 4-20 bikes), the material choices were influenced by the extremes of desert climate, it included QR codes for information and way finding, and the look of the piece was a dialogue with the mid-century vibe of Palm Springs architecture.

The bike stop design features “I-block” a product that Jim developed while an artist in residence at Workshop in San Francisco.

If you would like more information on the bike stop (we would be happy to make and sell these) or I-blocks, please contact us.
